Are you making New Year's resolutions? Maybe you should consider learning more about your own biology. You'd think birth control facts would be high on the list of important information for sexually active people in their 20's. But a recent study revealed that twenty-somethings are shockingly uninformed about their own bodies and the outcomes of their sex lives.Self Magazine and the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy surveyed thousands of women and men and both sexes flunked! Women scored correctly on 6 out of 11 questions: men were correct on a disappointing 4.7 answers! Here's what you need to know about your own sexual possibilities. Among couples who have sex regularly, 85% will get pregnant within a year if they use no birth control.A woman with a 28 day menstrual cycle is most likely to get pregnant about 2 weeks after the first day of her period. A woman can become pregnant even if her partner withdraws before ejaculation. If taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex, Plan B, or the morning after pill is 89% effective in preventing pregnancy. Woman over the age of 17 can get the morning after pill without going to a doctor or clinic and no prescription is needed. A woman using “the shot” (Depo-Provera) to prevent pregnancy, needs to get the shot every 3 months. Birth control pills are only fully effective if they are taken within the same three hour period every day. It is not necessary to take a break from the pill every few years. Women who take the pill cut the risk for some cancers, have a slightly elevated risk for others. If you don't smoke, the benefits of the pill outweigh the risks, according to Polly Marchbanks, Ph.D., an epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. An IUD (intrauterine device) can be used by any woman, not only those who have had a baby. Couples should not use Vaseline as a lubricant when using latex condoms. Oil based lubricants can cause a condom to break. Choose a water-based brand. |
