Food is love neon signFood. Sex. Parallel lines that meet in longing, obsession, fantasy, the quest to satiate our appetites, and our primal needs for sensual pleasure, beauty and intimacy. We deny ourselves food and sex at our own peril. These basic drives demand to be expressed.

Food and sex thrive on the senses – sight, touch, taste and smell and transcendence of ordinary experience, merging the physical with the sublime. Food and sex are messy and intoxicating. They satisfy our favorite desires. They affirm the life force that each of us treasures.

chile pepperAphrodisiacs, named for Aphrodite, have a 5,000 year history. Casanova fed his partners oysters. Greeks ate ripe fruit. An elixir of coriander was mentioned in the Arabian Nights. The Aztecs called avocado the testicle tree. Hot chile peppers are a metaphor for arousal.

The bible compared sex to forbidden fruit. Figs, cucumbers, bananas all suggest longed-for parts of our bodies. Apricots, papayas, peaches, pears are celebrated in erotic literature. Caviar, fish and seafood slither down our throats suggestively. Honey, sticky, sweet, viscous, natural, so amazing on our tongues, draws us into its sensuality. Chocolate elevates our endorphins, making us feel ready for anything. Rare and expensive foods like truffles awaken desire. Wine and alcoholic drinks loosen our inhibitions. Candlelit dinners are the prelude to seduction.

figsAuthor Diane Ackerman in A Natural History of the Senses” says "any food might be thought aphrodisiac." She suggests taking the time to investigate which fruits and vegetables appeal most in terms of their fragrance, shape, touch, texture and taste.

But the greatest aphrodisiac is when the person you adore desires you urgently. Desire produces desire and is difficult to resist.
